The History of Waterfall Cottage
The history and origin of Blythe Mill is somewhat blurred. Near the site of what is Waterfall Cottage today, there once stood a grist mill alongside the stream. The dam holding back the mill pond was dynamited in the 1940s. Remnants of the rock dam can be seen at the top of the waterfall. The mill property was purchased in December 1948 by Luther and Nettie Justus. The mill house was inhabited by the family until 1957. In 1967 the mill house was torn down and replaced with a Jim Walters home and was inhabited by family members for several years, until finally it stood vacant.
In the winter of 2020, the current owners purchased the home, the stream and waterfall and the meadow adjoining the property. Because the structure had been vacant for a number of years, it was in disarray and in great need of repair. The meadow was grown up with thorns and weeds. The creek held remnants of fallen trees from storm damage. In April 2020, an extensive renovation began. The structure was turned around to face the waterfall, walls were removed, a beautiful master suite was created, an expansive deck was added, and a striking navy blue was selected for the exterior. Several months later, the renovation was completed. In September 2020, Waterfall Cottage hosted its first guests. The primary purpose of Waterfall Cottage now is to host vacationers to the area. |
